This
grant does not have a match and the program would be fully covered by the Federal
Funds. If the Department is granted these funds this would allow for staff to receive
nutrition training and appointments with a nutritionist. Also, it would cover the cost of 2
new commercial refrigerators.
12 Group Training Sessions @ approximately 500/each $6,000
Three 1:1 Follow-up Appointments for 224 Officers $107,520
Two Commercial Refrigerators @ approximately $3,000/each $6,000
Contracted Therapists after critical incidents: $80,000
Total = Approximately $200,000
If granted these funds, there would need to be a budget amendment.
Project summary statement:
Officer Wellness is a focus for the department to recruit and retain staff in this highly
stressful but important job. Part of keeping our staff healthy and at work is good
nutrition. The LEMHWA grant would allow EPD to bring in a nutritionist to give classes and
one on one sessions to officers to teach them better nutrition habits. A challenge to good
nutrition is knowledge, time, and access. These funds would allow the department to give
the staff some knowledge and time to learn. Also, by purchasing new refrigerators, one
for each precinct break room, this would give the staff the ability to bring food and store
healthier food. This would give the staff the ability to access better meal options with
appropriate storage. The third use for the funds would be to have a contract Therapist on
call for staff after Critical Incidents. This will help keep staff from the effects of the trauma
from these events. If we are approved and received these funds this would be another
step to being able to retain and recruit officers to the City of Everett.
Recommendation (exact action requested of Council):
Authorize city staff to apply for and if awarded authorize the Mayor to sign all necessary
documents and agreements with the US Department of Justice, Office of Community
Oriented Policing Services, regarding the application, acceptance, and utilization of the
Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act Program Grant, in the amount of
$200,000.

City Council Agenda Item Cover Sheet
