Upon arrival, we
met with Pearson to discuss project plans.
During our visit, we observed the installation of five of the planned soldier piles. The boreholes for each pile were drilled with
a 24-inch diameter auger. No groundwater seepage or sloughing was observed within the boreholes. However, a large rock
was encountered at a depth of roughly 4.0 feet within the borehole for P15. The rock was removed with the excavator and
then the hole backfilled and drilling of the borehole continued. The beams were placed within the drilled holes and the
contractor pumped cement mixture into the boreholes up to the embedment depth for each piles. The number of piles
installed and depth of hole from the existing ground surface can be found in Table 1 below in order each soldier pile was
installed.
Table 1
Pile Number
Pile Length (ft)
Borehole Depth (ft)
Pile Schedule
P17
28.5
25.3
W14x34
P16
28.5
26.9
W1434
P15
28.5
26.7
W14x34
P14
28.5
26.5
W14x34
P13
30.5
27.5
W14x34
While on site we also observed as the contractor excavated the material around soldier piles P1 through P6 and
installed lagging within the 5 exposed bays. Lagging consisted of 12 by 4 pressure treated timber placed
between the piles with no spacing between the boards.
We have been providing geotechnical consultation and construction monitoring services on a full-time basis. Our findings
and conclusions are based on specific observations made while on site. In our opinion, the soldier piles observed today
were installed correctly and in general accordance with project plans. We will continue to monitor the installation of the
shoring system.
Attachment: Site Plan
Distribution:
Signed:
ForISaah L. Dunn
