Below are our
responses to the structural comments and referenced supplemental structural calculations.
STRUCTURAL
1. Please provide verification that the new gravity loading will not trigger a Tier II alteration to the
existing structural elements carrying gravity loads and lateral loads per Section 503.3 and Section
503.4 of the 2018 IEBC.
The existing retail area is designed for 100 psf Live Load. The attached calculation page 1 shows
our total climbing wall Dead+Live Loads does not exceed 100 psf. The attached calculation page
1 shows that added dead load for the climbing wall is less than a 0.5%increase to the total dead
load for the entire slab of the building therefore no Tier II analysis is required.
2. It appears that in Detail 6/CW3.1 a horizontal concentrated force will be applied to an existing
W12x I-Beam normal to its web. Please consider the following matters of steel construction from
the AISC Steel Construction Manual and any others applicable, but not mentioned below:
a. Application of concentrated forces to webs of wide-flange sections per Section J10 and
Section CJ10.
AISC Section J10 only applies to concentrated forces applied perpendicular to the beam flange.
For the horizontal load applied to the beam web,see attached calculation page 2 checking a flat
plate bent in weak axis per section F11.
b. Fillet weld limitations for web to flange connections as discussed in Section J2.2 and Table
J2.4 and Figure 8-11.
See attached calculation page 2 for weld check.
QUANTUM CONSULTING ENGINEERS-1511 THIRD AVENUE SUITE 323-SEATTLE WASHINGTON 98101 I T 206.957.3900
www.quanturnce.corn
11 )z
