Making our world
more productive
To Whom It May Concern, December 8, 2023
Please find attached a test summary report from the California Air Resource Board (GARB) on
Linde's Hydrogen Mobile Fueler. The testing was performed at Linde Services Inc. facility in
Rancho Cucamonga, CA between August 23rd and 24th,2023.
CARB's testing equipment and methodology is specifically focused on testing commercial
Hydrogen dispensing stations for the Light Duty Vehicles. These vehicles only have hydrogen
tank sizes at or below 248.6 L(<10 kg). Furthermore, the current revision of the fueling standard
(J2601) only allows fueling if the hydrogen has been cooled prior to injection (-17.5 to -40 °C).
The Linde system was designed for Heavy Duty Vehicles. These vehicles typically have total tank
volumes greater than 700 L (>20kg) and primarily only fill to a nominal pressure of 350 bar.
Currently, there is no standard filling protocol published by SAE that dictates gas temperature
ranges, filling rates, or target temperatures. As a result, Linde is using the Clean Energy
Partnership (CEP) protocols for these larger tanks that has been published and widely used in
Europe. To allow testing with CARB's smaller tanks, Linde implemented a preliminary draft of
the J2601 published in 2010 that allows ambient temperature injection.
Pages 7 and 8 show a summary of the tests performed during the CARB testing. A few of the tests
are marked as "failed." These are principally due to violation of the very tight allowable
temperature difference between ambient temperature and injected gas temperature that is specified
with the preliminary J2601 protocol ( 5°C). Linde is currently working on engineering controls
to mitigate the impact of solar radiation/heating on the interconnecting piping to allow operation
at this tighter window if the system is ever used for smaller tanks. This will not be an issue with
the CEP protocol as the allowable temperature difference is significantly higher ( 40°C) and
notably larger than what was observed during testing. All testing anomalies are addressed in the
report on pages 4,5, and 6.
Linde and GARB, as a result of the testing, confirmed that the safety protocols are in place and
properly functioning.
Please direct any questions to:
David Lehnert- David.Lenhert@linde.com
Kevin Mochen—Kevin.Mochen@Linde.com
