<br />16 <br /> <br />position date and, if applicable, to the next increment date. Salary step increases will <br />occur yearly from the current position date. <br />b. An employee receiving a promotion shall receive not less than one (1) full salary step <br />above that which their held in the previous grade. <br />3. Demotion. <br />a. An employee demoted either voluntarily or due to a reduction in force (RIF) shall be paid <br />the salary step in the lower pay range which is equivalent to the salary step currently <br />being paid. An employee who is demoted for either reason stated above shall have a <br />current position date which reflects all time spent within the classification. If the <br />employee is being compensated at a step higher than the highest step in the lower <br />classification, the employee shall be placed at the highest step in the lower range. <br />b. An employee demoted as a result of non-disciplinary reversion to a previous <br />classification shall return to their previous pay status, current position date and next <br />increment date. <br />c. An employee demoted as a result of disciplinary actions shall be subject to placement at <br />an appropriate level. <br /> <br />4. Lateral Transfer. <br />An employee who laterally transfers within the same classification to another work assignment <br />shall remain at the same step with the same current position date and, if applicable, the same next <br />increment date for the purpose of determining step salary increase. <br /> <br />5. Classification Changes Within Same Pay Range. <br />If an employee’s job classification changes but the pay range does not, no salary change shall <br />occur. Further, the employee shall receive a new current position date. The current position date <br />shall show the employee’s appointment into the new classification, but their next increment date <br />for purposes of determining step salary increase shall remain unchanged. <br /> <br />6. Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator Classification Progression. <br />Employees in the positions below will have pre-determined eligibility and progression in the <br />series: <br />1.Water Treatment Plant Operator I, Water Treatment Plant Operator II, Water Treatment <br />Plant Operator III <br /> <br />2.Water Pollution Control Operator I, Water Pollution Control Operator II, Water <br />Pollution Control Operator III <br /> <br />Eligibility to progress to the next classification in each series is based on the employee achieving <br />a set of qualifications as defined in the job description of the classification series, i.e. certification <br />and years of service. Employees must successfully pass probation in each classification and <br />cannot progress to the next classification if currently under a performance improvement plan. <br /> <br />The employee and/or supervisor shall be responsible to provide documentation validating that the <br />specified qualifications of the higher classification have been met. The employee’s Department <br />Director will approve or deny the promotion based on their assessment of whether the employee <br />has met all qualifications of the higher classification. The Director shall forward the applicable <br />documentation to the Human Resources Department. The effective date of the classification <br />progression shall be retroactive to the date the department director approved the promotion. <br /> <br />Once the employee meets the qualifications of the higher-level classification as outlined above, <br />the employee shall progress to the higher classification with the following understanding:
