What was the process to license Helion Energy?
When Helion Energy had made the decision to develop a Fusion device they were required to submit the following
License applications.
Materials license
Radioactive Materials I Washington State Department of Health
https://doh.wa.gov/community-and-environment/radiation/radioactive-materials
Air emissions license
Radioactive Air Emissions I Washington State Department of Health
https://doh.wa.gov/community-and-environment/radiation/radioactive-air-emissions
X-ray license
X-Ray I Washington State Department of Health
https://doh.wa.gov/community-and-environment/radiation/x-ray
Washington State Requirements for Fusion Device/Accelerator
https://apps.Leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=246-229
These license applications are robust and require evidence of professional qualifications related to their proposed
activities.A plan is required to monitor radiation. This plan takes into consideration such things as:type of
detection equipment, radiation survey frequency, shielding plans, and internal safety training. These are licensing
requirements that are scrutinized by DOH to determine whether they are satisfactory or need improvement.
Before a license is issued, a pre-license inspection is carried out by DOH health physicists that is designed to
identify malicious intent and answer questions like`Are they really who they say they are?'and `Does it appear that
they intend to do what they claim?'.They have satisfied pre and initial licensing inspections and have been
transparent with Washington DOH.
Radiation shielding plans were submitted to the X-Ray Control Section and found to meet occupational and public
dose limits.
Helion qualifies under NRC rules as an accelerator. The current accelerator regulations prescribe that a radiation
safety committee must be formed and meet regularly. Helion Energy has a radiation safety committee, a radiation
safety officer and trained authorized users.
Helion's workers will not be close to the fusion device when in operation. The plant design and protocols for
operation are developed with the goal to maximize the distance between them and radiation sources. To date, their
dosimetry records have shown very little worker exposure.
The above information asserts that Helion Energy has taken all necessary precautions to protect the public and
environment.
This information is provided by Washington State Department of Health Office of Radiation Protection
https://doh.wa.gov/community-and-environment/radiation
