The finished planed surface must be slightly 2
grooved or roughened and must be free from gouges, deep grooves, ridges, or other 3
imperfections. The Contractor must repair any damage to the surface by the Contractor’s 4
planing equipment, using an Engineer approved method. 5
6
Repair or replace any metal castings and other surface improvements damaged by 7
planing, as determined by the Engineer. 8
9
A tapered wedge cut must be planed longitudinally along curb lines sufficient to provide a 10
minimum of 4 inches of curb reveal after placement and compaction of the final wearing 11
course. The dimensions of the wedge must be as shown on the Drawings or as specified 12
by the Engineer. 13
14
A tapered wedge cut must also be made at transitions to adjoining pavement surfaces 15
(meet lines) where butt joints are shown on the Drawings. Cut butt joints in a straight line 16
with vertical faces 2 inches or more in height, producing a smooth transition to the 17
existing adjoining pavement. 18
19
After planing is complete, planed surfaces must be swept, cleaned, and if required by the 20
Contract, patched and preleveled. 21
22
The Engineer may direct additional depth planing. Before performing this additional 23
depth planing, the Contractor must conduct a hidden metal in pavement detection survey 24
as specified in Section 5-04.3(14)A. 25
26
5-04.3(14)A Pre-Planing Metal Detection Check 27
Before starting planing of pavements, and before any additional depth planing required 28
by the Engineer, the Contractor must conduct a physical survey of existing pavement to 29
be planed with equipment that can identify hidden metal objects. 30
31
Should such metal be identified, promptly notify the Engineer. 32
33
See Section 1-07.16(1) regarding the protection of survey monumentation that may be 34
hidden in pavement. 35
36
The Contractor is solely responsible for any damage to equipment resulting from the 37
Contractor’s failure to conduct a pre-planing metal detection survey, or from the 38
Contractor’s failure to notify the Engineer of any hidden metal that is detected. 39
40
*** 41
Immediately after grinding, the Contractor shall construct an asphalt transition 42
(temporary paper joints or ramps), on all traveled ways, wheel chair ramps, and exposed 43
manholes, inlets, catch basins, monuments, valve boxes, and other structures on the 44
street, regardless of depth in grinding. Asphalt transition must be removed prior to 45
overlay. Cast iron structures left higher than 2” must be removed and steel plates 46
installed to protect the opening and provide a suitable driving surface. 47
