-Oqn ZAP ENERGY
ZRD-SPL-001
2.3.2 Shielding Specifications
Additional shielding has been designed to meet the dose limits for the shielding design and the
ALARA principles. The specifications of the shielding are listed in Table 3; the 3D model in the
PHITS simulation model is shown in Figure 9 with a top-down view and a different angle view.
Table 3.Shielding description and their specifications.
Shielding Shielding Shielding
Description Shielding Height
Label Material Thickness
A West wall HDPE 5 in — 8 ft above the floor
B Southwest wall HDPE 5 in 8 ft above the floor
C South wall HDPE 6 in 8 ft above the floor
Supplementary 7 ft 10 in to 9 ft 10 in above the
D South wall HDPE 1 in floor
(overlap with"C"by 2 in)
E East wall HDPE 5 in 8 ft above the floor
F North wall HDPE 5 in 8 ft above the floor
G Northwest wall HDPE 5 in 8 ft above the floor
H HV Lab wall HDPE 1 in 8 ft above the floor
2.3.3 Dose Distribution with additional shielding and Dose Contributions from Gamma
The annual unshielded and shielded doses at the areas of consideration are listed in Table 2. Figure
10 shows a 2D dose map at the machine for the Zap Everlab facility with a 100-mrem/y iso-dose
boundary. The relative statistical uncertainties of the dose calculation in the PHITS Monte Carlo
simulation are plotted in Figure 11. The statistical uncertainties are in general below 3-5% at the
considered locations. It is concluded that the occupied areas are all below the dose limit with the
specific occupancy for each space with sufficient statistically significant confidence.
Among the total effective dose, contributions can be broken down into neutrons and gamma rays.
The gamma rays are generated when neutrons interact with the surrounding materials and the
HDPE shielding. The dose contribution from gamma rays in shown in Figure 12 with an iso-dose
line of 10 mrem/y. It is confirmed that the gamma rays only contribute to a few percent of the total
doses in the areas of concern.
Zap Energy Inc. Proprietary Information
12
