Backlit signs with letters or graphics on a plastfc sheet (cabinet signs) are prohibited 2 <br />unless otherwise noted. 3 <br />b. Backlit logos under six square feet or individual backlit letters are permitted. 4 <br />c. Externally lit signs are encouraged. 5 <br />2. Wall Signs. 6 <br />a. Wall signs shall be designed and located appropriate to the building’s architecture. 7 <br />For example, wall signs must not cover windows, building trim or ornamentatfon. 8 <br />b. Wall signs may not extend above the building parapet, soffit, the eave line or the 9 <br />roof of the building, or the windowsill of the second story. Exceptfon: individual letters 10 <br />may extend above the building parapet, soffit or eave line by a maximum of eighteen 11 <br />inches. There shall be no backing material or exposed/visible supports. 12 <br />c. Wall signs should be mounted plumb with the building, with a maximum protrusion 13 <br />of one foot, unless the sign incorporates sculptural elements or architectural devices. 14 <br />The sign frame shall be concealed or integrated into the building’s architectural 15 <br />character in terms of form, color, and materials. 16 <br />3. Upper Story Wall Signage. In the event of a conflict with other provisions of this chapter, the 17 <br />requirements in this sectfon shall prevail. 18 <br />a. One upper story sign may be permitted per building facade for nonresidentfal and 19 <br />mixed-use buildings. Such signs are in additfon to other permanent signs allowed 20 <br />pursuant to sign category B. 21 <br />b. Each upper story wall sign shall not exceed one hundred ninety square feet. 22 <br />c. Upper story wall signs shall be limited to logo and/or name only. 23 <br />d. Upper story wall signs shall be located forty feet or more above the elevatfon of the 24 <br />sidewalk or alley, but may not extend above the building parapet, soffit, the eave line or 25 <br />the roof of the building. Signs shall be mounted so as to not obstruct any window, 26 <br />building trim, ornamentatfon or other significant architectural detail. 27 <br />e. Upper story wall signs shall be limited to channel lettering and/or logos, with halo 28 <br />lightfng effects. Lightfng may be used to accent signs. Electronic message center signs 29 <br />and cabinet signs are prohibited. 30 <br />CHAPTER 19.37 CRITICAL AREAS 31 <br />19.37.050 Exemptions—Exceptions—Modifications. 32 <br />Certain actfvitfes are exempt from the requirements of this chapter, while other actfvitfes which are 33 <br />regulated by this chapter may be granted specific exceptfons or an administratfve modificatfon.
