KA No. 092-12004
August 24,2012
Page No.7
geotechnical engineer may reject any material that does not meet compaction and stability requirements.
Further recommendations, contained in this report, are predicated upon the assumption that earthwork
construction will conform to the recommendations set forth in this section and in the Structural Fill
Section.
Foundations
General: The proposed building may be supported on a shallow foundation system bearing on the
medium dense to very dense native soils, or on structural fill extending to the medium dense or better
native soils. Alternatively, the proposed building may be founded on piling extending through the soft
soils into the underlying dense to very dense native soils.
Based on our explorations, the medium dense or firmer native soil should typically be encountered near
the surface in the eastern portion of the site and approximately 10 feet below the surface in the western
portion of the site. It is possible that deeper areas of soft/loose soils could be encountered in the
unexplored areas of the property. The soil borings near the west side of the proposed building pad
encountered soft/loose saturated soils at depth and caving conditions may be encountered in excavations
in these areas.
Shallow Foundations: Shallow spread footings supported on structural fill or medium dense or better
native soil may be designed using an allowable design bearing pressure of 2,500 pounds per square foot
(psf)for dead plus live loads. This value may be increased 1/3 for short durations loads such as wind or
seismic.A representative of Krazan and Associates should evaluate the foundation bearing soil.
Footings should have a minimum embedment depth of 18 inches below pad subgrade (soil grade) or
adjacent exterior grade, whichever is lower. Footing widths should be based on the anticipated loads
and allowable soil bearing pressure. Water should not be allowed to accumulate in footing trenches.
Footings should have a minimum width of 12 inches regardless of load. All loose or disturbed soil
should be removed from the foundation excavation prior to placing concrete.
Structural fill should be compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density based on ASTM
Test Method D1557. Footing excavations should be inspected to verify that the foundations will bear on
suitable material.
For foundations constructed as recommended, the total settlement is not expected to exceed 1 inch.
Differential settlement, along a 20-foot exterior wall footing, or between adjoining column footings
should be less than 'h inch. Most settlement is expected to occur during construction, as the loads are
applied. However, additional post-construction settlement may occur if the foundation soils are flooded
or saturated. It should be noted that the risk of liquefaction is considered low, given the composition and
density of the native,on site soils.
Krazan&Associates,Inc.
Eleven Offices Serving The Western United States
