Peter Chopelas, PE
Engineering & Design Services
307 N. Olympic Avenue, Suite 208
Arlington, WA 98223
(360) 653-4615; Chopelasandassociates@gmail.com
March 2, 2024
Terry and Teddy Starzl
1202 Rucker Ave.
Everett,WA 98201
Subject: Inspection to the roof framing changes and supporting structure for the home at the
above address.
An inspection of the subject roof framing was accomplished to determine how it was actually
framed as compared to the approved plans. It was found the there was a 4x8 beam installed
horizontally, clear spanning the attic space to support the roof framing, that was not on the
approved plans. This loaded the roof framing differently than as designed.
An analysis was done on the roof framing structure, and was found this was an acceptable
change, all of the roof and supporting structure is acceptable. But the horizontal 4x8 needs to be
reinforced. This can be accomplished by either changing the 4x8 to be a 4x10 HF #2. or a
simple alternative can be to reinforce the existing beam by adding a 2x8 onto the side of the
beam. The existing beam can remain in place, and a 2x8 can be nailed to the side of of the 4x8,
so the net size should be about 3.5 + 1.5 = 5"width. The 2x8 HF #2 (or a DF-L) should be
nailed tight to the existing beam, with two rows of 1 Od nails, one near the top edge and one at the
lower edge, at 6" spacing. With two extra nails at each end. It should clear span from the post
supports under the beam.
If you have any questions or are in need of further assistance, please feel free to call or email.
Cy
Peter Chopelas PE
