There is no ridge beam or board in the dinning addition roof framing. ...This kind of structure is
not allowed per code, but as far as structural engineer is ok,we are ok with it.
Response: This roof structure was detailed inspected in December, and an analysis of the loads
was accomplished. The rafter size is acceptable fore the span, but to protect the walls from
outward rafer pressure, the ceiling joists must be nailed to the rafter tails with a min of(6) 1 Od
nails between the ceiling joists and the rafter at the eaves. This can also be accomplished with a
metal strap with a min of six nails at either end of the connection. Because of the installed
ceiling board this connection could not be verified. As an alternative to adding nailing to the
rafter/joist connection,a ridge beam can be added under the ridge to support it. It would be about
6.5 ft long,and can be composed of(2)2x6 HF#2 or a single 4x6 HF#2, supported at both ends.
The large GL beam can carry the point load, but the other end is over the pay window. Verify, or
install, that this window has a min header size of(2)2x6 or a single 4x6 header HF#2.
2. Please add a jack stud[at the archway between the dining room and rear of the home] .A
horizontal piece shall never be hung like this.
Response: This is not a load bearing wall, it is just an unloaded archway that supports the wall
board only.Roof members are parallel with this archway. A jack stud is not necessary, nor
desirable since it will intruded into the room, but the plate should be attached with a simple angle
like the Simpson A34, or an HH4. This will provide more than enough support and stabilize the
connection with a positive attachment at the plate and wall trimmer.
In addition, adding crawl space ventilation with screened or louvered vents is a good idea. Using
the crawl space access door and any other blocked off openings in the foundation wall.
If you have any questions or are in need of further assistance please feel free to call.
is
14
.gam... . l..
Peter Chopelas PE
