Design
Soldier Piles
Several pile designs were considered based on different wall heights.
Soldier pile design calculation sheets are included in Appendix A.
Deflection Estimate
Based on previous experience with soils similar to those present on this site, including loose fill and
glacial till, and as indicated by our attached deflection calculation, we estimate that the deflection
measured at the face of the top of the shoring walls is not expected to exceed 1-in maximum.
Timber Lagging
The timber lagging was designed using the recommend thickness presented in the table in WSDOT
Standard Specifications section 6-16.3(6)B. The fill primarily consists of loose silty sands and gravel and is
classified as Soil Type 2.The dense granular deposits below the fill is considered Soil Type 1. For both
soil types, 4x timber lagging is acceptable for all lagging on site.
WSDOT allows temporary timber lagging for soldier pile walls to be untreated timber, Douglas Fir-Larch
#2 or better, per sections 6-16.3(6)B and 9.09.2(1).
