Structural Design Associates
,, ` 1S1TJ,'ineeI-hW Sti'itcl II,e ICI I(tsf
'/ \\.
S&19943811
November 28, 2022
Attn: Tim Davis
Project Address: 3327 Hoyt Ave Everett, WA 98201
Subject: West Egress Footing Grade Beam
SDA Ref. #9438A
To whom this may concern:
At the request of Tim Davis this office reviewed photos of the West Stair Egress project to review the
requested footing and footing grade beam alternative.
After reviewing photos and discussing the project with the contractor this office was made aware that the
posts for the West Egress are not centered on the excavated holes. Plastic sleeves were installed to prevent
the hole from caving These sleeves are similar in nature to a Sonotube. A clear distance of at least 1 V is
maintained froth the post to sleeve. The sleeve and post hole extends approximately 46" below grade. The
contractor has opted to install an 1 I"deep grade beam between the posts. The grade beam encapsulates
and extends past the sleeve.
The proximity of the post to the sleeve edge is anticipated to reduce the effective lateral passive pressure
of the post by approximately ''/z of the original 24" sleeve diameter. The grade beam and adjacent slab will
provide restraint on the ground surface. The attached pole footing embedded in soil calculation
demonstrates this reduction in effective lateral passive pressure is negated by the grade beam. Therefore,
the proposed footing grade beam is permitted as an approved alternative to the isolated embedded posts.
To ensure continuity of the grade beam additional reinforcement along the grade beam is required. This
reinforcement shall consist of the following:
1) (2)#4 hairpins at each end post with a 24" minimum lap length.
2) (4)#4 hairpins at each center post with a 24"minimum lap length.
3) Horizontal #4 bars to match hairpin locations,
4) Reinforcement shall be evenly spaced and a ground clear cover of 3"maintained.
5) A side clear cover of 1 3/4"shall be maintained between the reinforcement and end of the grade
beam.
6) A minimum of(2)posts shall be encapsulated by the grade beam system.
7) Sleeve, grade beam, and topping slab shall be installed in a monolithic concrete placement.
Please contact this office if you have any questions concerning this letter,or for any other assistance.
Sincerely, Cov
A
O
Z
i
343
Chris Covington, P.E.
NOV 30, 2022
3006 Rucker i\vc, Ivcrctt,\Vi\ 98201 Pli: 425-339-0293 Fax: 425-252-0916
sdaeverett.com
