I
By: All
We visited the site today at the request of Dean Van Overbeke, with Van Overbeke Construction for the
purpose of construction monitoring at the Hamstra project at 520 Madison Street in Everett, WA. Dean
requested that we evaluate the footing subgrade for an underground vault.
The geologic units for this site are shown on the Geologic Ma of the Everett 7.5-minute Quadrangle,
Washington, by James P. Minard (USGS, 1985). The site is mapped as glacial till (Qvt).
Upon arrival we met with Dean. We observed that the excavation was approximately 25 feet long by 10
feet wide by 8 feet deep and was adjacent to the sidewalk along Madison Street. We also observed that
the footings had been poured prior to our arrival, and the walls of the vault excavation were nearly
vertical. We observed that the materials exposed in the excavation consisted of silty fine to medium
sand with gravel, which we interpreted to be the native glacial till soil.
The vault footings had been poured and the wall forms were in place so our access to the vault subgrade
was very limited. We evaluated the exposed subgrade in the base of the excavation, outside of the vault
wall forms on a portion of the south side with a %2-inch diameter steel probe rod. In general, the
subgrade soil could be probed 1-inch under moderate pressure and was interpreted as dense glacial till.
We have been providing our monitoring services on a part time basis only. Based on our limited
observations at the site, it is our opinion that the footing subgrade consists of dense native soil and
should support the planned load.
We did not evaluate the stability of the vault excavation. NGA is not responsible for job site safety for
this project. Job site safety is solely the responsibility of the contractor. We recommend that the vault
excavation comply with all applicable OSHA/WISHA safety regulations.
Attachment:
Distribution:
Signed: CVMLI
