Mr. Miguel Ortega
TEKAS Fire & Hood Installations, LLC
Plan Check Number: M2110-081, First Building Review
November 8, 2021
Comments
1. The proposed project may require modifications to the building, including but not limited to the
roof and ceiling framing, and the wall supporting the hood. A separate building permit
application is required for building modifications. See IBC Section 105.1.
2. Continuing with the previous comment, modifications to the structural system will require
structural drawings and calculations prepared by a professional engineer licensed in the state of
Washington. See IBC Section 107.1, and RCW Sections 18.43.010, 18.43.020, and 18.43.070.
3. Typical Section B/M1 shows the installation of the new hood and MAU on the roof of the
building. See IBC Section 107.2.1. The following comments should be addressed:
a. The plans should include a roof plan showing the location of the MAU.
b. The building is a converted house with a steep slope that is anticipated to be framed with
roof joists. The section shows a standard flat roof with trusses, and is not valid. A section
specific to the proposed work should be included.
c. The weights of the hood and MAU should be specified in the drawings. Calculations
evaluating the strength of the roof to support the units should be submitted for review. See
IEBC Section 806.2.
d. The MAU is located on a sloped roof and is required to have a service platform complying
with IMC Section 306.5.1.
4. The submittal documents include generic manufacturer requirements for suspending the hood.
Details specific to the project for connecting the hood to the structure above should be included
in the construction drawings. See IBC Sections 107.2.1 and 1604.1.
5. The building construction appears to be wood framing. The hood is required to have a
minimum 18-inch clearance to combustible materials. Alternatively, reduced clearance
construction is required peer IMC Table 308.4.2. See IMC Section 507.2.6.
6. Section A/M1 shows the zero-clearance duct wrap extending not more than 18-inches below the
roof framing. The duct is anticipated to be located against a wall. The wrap should extend for
the full height of the duct. See IMC Section 506.3.6.
7. Up-blast fans serving Type I hoods shall be installed with a hinge, restraint, and flexible
electrical cable to permit inspection and cleaning. These do not appear to be specified. The
drawing should be revised.
