nBatesch, Nash & Hall
Architects, P.S.
• October 25, 2018
City of Everett
3200 Cedar Street
Everett, WA 98201
Attn: Mr. Tony Lee
Re: Providence Colby Campus—Switchgear Room Entry Threshold
Dear Tony:
I am writing this letter as a follow up to our on-site meeting with you and the electrical inspector on
October 23, 2018.We discussed an `alternate means and method solution'to the Switchgear Room entry
threshold issue. The issue of concern is that the painted, floor mounted removable steel angle still
remains a potential tripping hazard for emergency exiting out of the room.
As a result of the meeting the following is what was agreed would be the acceptable`alternate means and
method' solution to the tripping hazard:
1) The painted, floor mounted removable steel angle and removable bar will be permanently
removed from the exterior double door location. It was determined that since the oil that is to be
contained is vegetable seed oil, the exterior area outside of the doorway will be considered as
an acceptable 'area of containment'for oil that spills outside under the door threshold.
2) The painted, floor mounted removable steel angle and removable bar will be permanently
removed from the interior double door location. It was determined that an acceptable means of
oil containment would be the installation of hardware(i.e. type of door sweep)at the bottom of
the doors. This would act as a barrier preventing oil from leaking out of the room into the interior
hallway.
As requested, I have attached cut sheets for two door bottom barrier hardware options that we are
choosing from. Also attached are product characteristics and physical properties.
Thank you again for meeting with us to help find a solution that everyone agrees would meet the intent of
the code. Please call me at 425-259-0868 or via e-mail at devin@bnharch.com if you have any additional
questions.
Sincerely,
Botesch, Nash & Hall Architects, P.S.
Devin Saylor,AIA
Senior Associate
