City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016
ChildStrive
Shelter Program
EXHIBIT A: Program Summary
The ChildStrive Shelter program serves families who are homeless, are residing in a family shelter, and
are pregnant or have children up to the age of 5 years. This program helps promote healthy development
of children living in shelters and supports their parents who face the challenges of parenting in an
environment often lacking resources for children. ChildStrive has been collaborating with local shelter
service providers and providing early learning and child development services in homeless shelters for 15
years.
ChildStrive provides parenting support and play groups in family shelters in Everett and Snohomish
County. Licensed social workers employed by ChildStrive provide regular visits to family shelters. Visit
frequency is dictated by the number of preschoolers residing at the shelter at the time. Services include
screening of all preschoolers to identify if they are falling behind their peers in development and referring
for intervention if there is a need; providing play groups for preschoolers and their parents; providing
groups for parents to help them learn skills to support their young children's development during this
difficult time for the family; and providing individual meetings with parents and children to support them
with parenting, development and resource needs. In addition,we provide consultation and training to
staff at shelters and at Tomorrow's Hope Childcare Center to support their ability to meet the needs of
very young children.
