0411° <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 6828 <br /> A Resolution in Support of the Establishment of a <br /> Washington State University Medical School. <br /> WHEREAS,the need to establish another medical school in our state is critical; and <br /> WHEREAS, more than 800 Washingtonians applied to medical school in 2012-13 in a <br /> state in which there are only 120 publicly funded seats available per class; and <br /> WHEREAS, of all state residents who attended medical school that year, two-thirds left <br /> the state to do so; and <br /> WHEREAS, Washington State University (WSU) has been educating medical students <br /> enrolled in the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho Medical Education <br /> program, or WWAMI, since it was founded. WWAMI was created to train primary care <br /> and family physicians for underserved areas of eastern Washington and the states of <br /> Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho; and <br /> WHEREAS, WSU's proposed Community-Based Medical Education (CBME) model is <br /> the best approach for accomplishing this goal and meeting the needs of the evolving 21st <br /> century healthcare system; and <br /> WHEREAS,the CBME model provides medical students with field experiences in a <br /> variety of community settings, including smaller hospitals and clinics; and <br /> WHEREAS, a WSU Medical School affiliation with local health care providers would <br /> greatly benefit the City of Everett, the county and the region; and <br /> WHEREAS, it is time for a new medical school to serve Washington's educational and <br /> health needs, now and in the years to come; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND EVERETT CITY <br /> COUNCIL THAT: <br /> THE CITY OF EVERETT SUPPORTS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A <br /> WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL SCHOOL AND URGES THE <br /> LEGISLATURE TO FACILITATE ITS FORMATION. <br />
