However,
in certain situations, Uponor recognizes splices or joints in Uponor AquaPEX and Wirsbo hePEX may be
necessary for tube installed in or under a concrete slab. In such instances, it is important the installer uses the b
proper fitting for the application and observes proper installation techniques. Below is a list of fittings most -''
commonly used with Upono AquaPEX and Wirsbo hePEX tubing, along with a brief overview of their
appropriate usage and limitations.
• ProPEX° engineered polymer (EP) fittings (tees, elbows, couplings or plugs) are the most versatile
fittings and can be buried diredly in the soil, in or under a concrete slab in both exterior and interior
applications, or in concealed or accessible spaces.
• ProPEX lead-free (LF) brass fittings (tees, elbows, couplings or adapters) may be buried directly in the
soil, under a slab in both exterior and interior applications, or in concealed or accessible spaces. Note
that fittings buried directly in concrete must be completely wrapped with a piece of flexible insulation
or similar isolating makeriai.
• ProPEX yellow brass fittings (tees, elbows, couplings or adapters) for installations in non-potable water
applications may be used in concealed or accessible locations, but must be completely wrapped with a
piece of flexible insulation or similar isolating material if buried in or under a slab in both exterior and
interior applications.
Additionally, PEX tubing for potable hot- and cold-water distribution is approved for installation directly within
or below concrete slabs, provided the application of any required pesticide/termiticide treatment is done
according to recommendations. The PEX tubing is not required to be sleeved; however, Uponor's installation
instructions recommend using either flexible polyethylene (PE} protection sleeves or rigid PVC bend guides at
all slab penetrations to protect the PEX tubing from abrasion.
When using Uponor's pre-sleeved tubing products or a protection sleeve around the tubing, an annular gap
between the protection device and the PEX tubing will exist. In such installations, the installer must fill the
annular gap between the protection device and the PEX tubing at the exposed ends to prevent pathways for
pests and the mistaken application of harmful chemicals into this space. The following sealants may be used
with Uponor PEX tubing provided the sealant manufacturer has approved its use for contact with PEX.
• Latex caulk
• Latex foam
• Silicone sealant
• Polyurethane expanding foam
Provided the above requirements are followed, the applicable Uponor warranty will remain in effect for the
PEX tubing and ProPEX fittings.
