IIBBLE ENGIfEF, II.
Professional Structurai Engineering Services
S t'YZC t2l.YtX.I
Review
S 2lYi'I.Yt1GiY1
I locver, the sett(ement at the south end of Building 425 does not appcar to be relatcd to lateral earih pressures.
NGA noted organic and till material helov the foundations at View Ridge at the east end that likely caused the
settlemeirt. DF.1 did not obscrvc any failure modes associated -ith a failure do to lateral earth pressures. Ttiis
votild includc distress suc}i as long horizontal cracking at mid-heiht ofi the basement valls and/or movement of
thc top of the wall towards the interior of the building.
If attempts to strengthen the basement valls are not made and if the lateral earth pressures exceed the basement
alls' capacity to resist the►n, the basement alls, primarily at the top, vould move toward the cravlspace. The
basement valls ill likelv move at different rates, thcrefore a portion of the basement vall may initially fail but
not necessarily result in a collapsc of the buildin above. If this happens, the avners at Viev Ridge vill nced to
repair tlie section of basement vall in addition to implemeiitin clements of NGA's all strengttieni►ig
recommendations in the viciniri of the immediate aca of the failure.
Wall Manitoring
A mcthod to mqnitor vall movement du ta lateral earth
pressures inclucles visually inspccting tlie alls on an
annual basis for horizontal cracking at the rnid-heiht of
wall.
