The new
material weighs 1 pound per square foot (psf).
The original metal building roof system was more than likely designed for a
dead load of approximately 4 psf, with a 25 psf design snow load.
The additional 1 psf will increase the load on the roof by 3.4% which is
structurally acceptable.
There are twelve existing skylights/smoke vents on the roof that will have their
plastic domes replaced with new ones. There will be twenty eight new skylights
added to the roof per the attached plan.
The new skylights will not adversely affect the lateral capacity of the building.
In a metal building the lateral loads are resisted by the building frames spaced
about 25' apart. The loads come out of the roof metal sheathing through the
purlins attached to the frames.
With a 195' wide building with an eave height of approximately 25' a building
frame would resist about 17 psf of wind load for a load to a frame of about 6,800
pounds per side. The shear stress in the sheathing/purlins would be 35 pounds
per linear foot (plf). The capacity of the metal skins is about 75 plf.
STIlt:cTintnl.• FoI;NDaIoy • CIVIL ENGINEERS
