All coinpaction should be accomplislled by equipnleut of a type and size sufficient to
attain the desired degree of compaction.
If -ound water scepage is encountered or if excessive rainfall occurs durin construcCion of
spccific aspects, we recommend tllat the contractor slope thc bottoul of tlle excvations atid direct
the water to ditches aiid suall sump pits. The collected water can tleu be directed to a suitable
discharge point at the bottom of the slope.
USE OF THIS LETTER
This letter has been prepai-ed for Ahmed Alhussaini and his aeits for use in the planning of the
slope inprovenents and retaining walls on tliis site only. The scope of our work does not ilclude
services related to construction safety precautions and our recommendations are not intended to
direct the contractors' methods, techniques, sequences, or procedures, except as specifically
described in our letter. There are possible variations in subsurface conditions between tlle
exploratioiis and also witll tinle. Our letter, conclusions, and interpi-etations should not be
consti-ued as a wai-i-anty of subsui-face conditiois. /\ contingency for unanticipatcd coilclitioils
should be included ii the budget aud schedule.
We sllould be retained to i-eview iinal slope improvement, wall layout and consti-uction pllns
prioc to breaking ground. It is critical that tle design incoiporates all of the recoumendations
provided in this lettcr. Failing to do so could easily create conditious for a global landslide that
would atfect all oi the new walls and lalldscaping. We also recommend tllat NGA be r-etained to
pr-ovide nionitoring a1d consultation seivices during consti-uction to confirm tllat tle conditions
encountered are consistent with those indicated by tlle explorations, to provide reconmzendations
for desigil changes should the conditions cevealed during the work differ from those anticipated,
and to evaluate whether ar not retaining wall installation complies with our recomnlendations.
We should be coiitacted a minimum of one week prior to construction activities.
All people who own or occupy homes on or uer hillsides should realize that landslide
moveinents ai-e always a possibility. The landowner should periodically iiispect the slope,
NELSON GEOTECHNICAL ASSOCIATES, INC.
