The Mayor invited Police Chief
Dan Templeman to explain the police policy that was updated in 2010.
Police Chief Templeman spoke about the Everett Police Department's
policy on the enforcement of immigration laws, which is available for
viewing on the City's website. He explained the policy is intended to
ensure that individuals who are victims or witnesses to a crime feel safe
speaking with police, regardless of their immigration status.
President Murphy stated he had received several inquiries from citizens
over the past week seeking clarification if the City of Everett is, from a
policy position, a "Sanctuary City." President Murphy stated he
appreciated the Chief's clarification that, from a policy standpoint, the City
is not in a sanctuary city classification in that if there are people victimizing
others, the police department will not hesitate to cooperate with federal
authorities from an immigration standpoint.
396
