ARTICLE 20 - EDUCATION <br /> 1. Voluntary Education: The City recognizes the value of education and agrees to follow <br /> those terms as outlined in the City Tuition Aid program. <br /> 2. Mandatory Education: <br /> A. It is agreed that the City shall pay the cost of all EMT certification and <br /> recertification classes and tests taken by all firefighters, regardless of date <br /> hired. Further, firefighters who are taking required EMT courses shall be <br /> allowed sufficient time off with pay to attend those classes should the <br /> scheduling of these classes coincide with the employee's normal work <br /> schedule. <br /> B. For attending prerequisite classes required to attend formal paramedic <br /> training at Harborview (for example Anatomy and Physiology) paramedic <br /> trainees will be compensated at a rate of 12.5% of the first class firefighter pay <br /> per week during enrollment in the class. Class attendance is mandatory to <br /> receive the stipend. The students will be allowed sufficient time off with pay to <br /> attend those classes should the scheduling of these classes coincide with the <br /> employee's normal work schedule. <br /> Paramedic trainees attending formal paramedic training at Harborview will be <br /> released from normal duty and will receive a stipend equal to 12.5% of First <br /> Class Firefighter pay per month in lieu of all overtime, lodging, meal and travel <br /> expenses. <br /> Upon successful completion of the formal paramedic training at Harborview the <br /> paramedic trainees will receive 12.5% of First Class Firefighter pay per month <br /> while completing their training on the EFD Medic Units prior to promotion to <br /> paramedic. <br /> If the paramedic training program changes from Harborview, then this clause is <br /> subject to negotiation between the parties. <br /> C. If the required number of hours of continuing medical education is increased <br /> beyond the requirements, as of December 31, 1987, for the position of EMT, <br /> EMTA and Paramedic, the employees shall be compensated at time-and-one- <br /> half of the employee's regular hourly salary for each hour spent in a class or <br /> training session. <br /> D. The City recognizes the value of training paramedics under the purview of the <br /> City Medical Program Director. <br /> Paramedics are required to attend mandatory Continuing Medical Education <br /> (CME) training. During the required CME training, a paramedic will receive 1.5 <br /> times his/her hourly salary up to a maximum of 30* required CME hours under <br /> the following conditions: <br /> 1.
