Washington Preservation Initiative f
2003 Grant Application Y
additional workshop training in various aspects of photo conservation, and has
occasionally been on panels discussing these issues. She also has worked at
EPL in this capacity for nearly 27 years, and knows the needs of the J. A. Juleen
collection.
Other participants will include our library webmaster Steve Ooton and graphics
designer Kevin Duncan, who will add panorama images to the library website.
Once the panoramas are duplicated, the basics of preservation will have been
completed for the Juleen collection. The library is committed to maintaining these
images, both in storage as well as keeping current regarding new
methods/treatments and processes as they become recommended. We believe
that our past efforts to preserve and maintain this collection, and the work we have
done to make so many of our photographic resources available via the web,
speaks to our commitment to balance both preservation and access—a
commitment that continues to be part of our strategic plan. EPL plans for these
views to be available to the public for years to come.
8. What other sources of funding were considered to support
implementation of this proposal?
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• Describe these sources of funding
• Has the library applied for or received funding from these funding sources?
If not, why?
• What other funding will be used to implement this project?
Review and Evaluation
This question worth 5 points. Reviewers will look for:
• Full use of other funding sources to the extent possible
• Clear explanations of why other funding sources were not appropriate,
or did not fully fund this proposal
Everett Public Library has already invested $1,000 for duplication of 20
panoramas, plus an additional amount for storage materials. These views
(originals and copies) are stored in the library's archive. Presently patrons can
purchase copy prints of Northwest Room photos, and they pay for this service.
Recently new rates have been approved by our library board that include cost of
digital reproduction of panorama images. Thus, the service will continue to pay for
itself.
The library's materials budget has covered the cost of archival materials in past
years, but these funds will be limited in remaining 2003 and 2004. Even if it were
possible to continue duplicating at the rate of a few images each year, time is
critical, both for the preservation of the images and for accessibility. A grant to
complete the remaining images is important to their survival.
2
