I
i
Maintenance
The Vortechs System should be inspected at regular intervals and maintainPd when necessary to
ensure optimum perTormance. The rate at which the system collects pollutants will depend more
heavily on sile activities than ihe size of the unit, e.g., unstable sols or heavy winter sanding wiil cause
the gnt chamber to fill more Guickly but regular sweeping will slow accumulation.
Inspection
Inspec:ion is the key ro eL`ective maintenance and is easly performed. CONTECH Stormwater
Solutions recommends ongoing quarterly inspections o(the accumulated sediment. Pollutant
deposition and tiansport may vary from year to year and quarterly inspecGons will help insure that
systems are cleaned out al the appropriate time. Inspectiors should be peAormed more ohen in the
winlar months in climates where sanding operations may lead to rapid accumulations, or in equipment
i washdown areas. It is very useful to keep a record of each inspection.A simple form for doing so is
provided.
The Vortechs System should be cleaned when inspection reveals that the sediment deplh has
accumulated to within six inches o(the dry-weather water surtace elevation. This determination can be
made by taking 2 measurements with a stadia rod or similar measuring device;one measurement from
i the manhole opening to the lop of the sedimeit pile and the other from the manhole opening to the
' water surfaca The System should be cleaned out if lhe differance between lhe two measurercents is
six inches or less. 4(g: tavoid underestimating the volume of sediment in the chamber, the
measuring device rnust be lowered ro lhe top of lhe sediment pile carefully. Finer, silty particles at the
top of Uie pile typically offer less resislance to Ihe end o(the rod Ihan larger particles toward the boltom
of the pile.
Cleaning
Maintaining the Vortechs system is easiest when Ihere is no flow entenng the syslem. For this reason,
it is a good idea to schedule the cleanout during dry weather. Cleanout of the Vortechs system with a
vacuum truck is generally the most effective and canvenient method of excavaling pollutants from the
system. If such a truck is not available, a "clamshell"grab may be used, but it is difficult lo remove all
accumulaled pollutanls with such device=.
in installations where the risk of large petroleum spills is small, liquid contaminants may not
accumulate as quickly as sediment. However, an oil or gasoline spill should be cleaned out
immediately. Motor oil and other hydrocarbons that accumulale on a more rouline basis should be
remeved when an appreciable layer has been captured. To remove lhese pollutants, il may be
preferable to use adsorbent pads since they are usually cheaper to dispose o(th.an the oil water
emulsion that may be created by vacuuming the oily layer. Trash can be netted out if you wish to
separate it from the other pollutants.
Accumulated sediment is typically evacualed through the manhole oer the grit chambec Simply
remove the cover and insert the vacuum hose into the gril chamber. As waler is evacuated, the water
level outside o(the grit chamber will drop to the same Ievei as the crest of the lower aperture cf ihe grit
chambec Il will not drop below this level due to the facl that the bottom and sides of the grit chamber
are sealed to the tank floor and walls. This'Water Lock"feaWre prevents water from migrating into the
grit chamber, exposing the bottom of the baHle wall. Floaling pollutants will decant into the gnt
chamber as lhe water level there is drawn down. This allows most(loating malerial to be withdrawn
from the same acess point above the grit chamber.
It maintenance is not peAormed as recommended, sediment may accumulate outside the gnt
chambec If this is the case, it may be necessary to pump out all chambers. !t is a good idea to check
(cr accumulation in all chambers dunng each maintenance event to prevent sediment build up there.
Manhole covers should be securely seated followin cleaning activities, to ensure that surface runoff
does rot leak in[o lhe unit(rom above.
i =200r', CONTECH Stormwater Soiutions
