!::,i:lcn:cc
Maintenance
The Vortechs System should be inspected at regular intervals and maintained when necessary to
ensure optimum performance. The rate at which the system collects pollutants will depend more
heavily on sile activities than the size of the unit,e.g.,unstable soils or heavy winter sanding will cause
the gril chaber to fill more quickly bul regular sweeping will slow accumulation.
Inspection
Inspeclion is the key lo effective maintenance and is easily per(ormed. CONTECH Slormwater
Solutions recommends ongoing qarterly inspections o(the accumulated sediment. Pollutant
deposition and transport may vary from year to year and quarterly inspeclions will help insure lhal
systems are cleaneA out at the appropriate time. Inspections should be peAormed more often in the
winter months in climates where sanding operalions may lead lo rapid accumulations,or in equipmenl
washdown areas. It is very usefl to keep a record of each inspeclion. A simple form tor doing so is
provided.
The Vortechs System should be cleaned when inspection reveals that the sediment deplh has
accumulated to within six inches of the dry-weather water surface elevation. This detertnination can be
made by takiny 2 measuremenis with a stadia rod or similar measuring device;one measurement from
the manhole opening to the top o(the sediment pile and the other from the manhole opening lo the
waler surface. The System should be cleaned out if the diflerence between the two measurements is
six inches ur less.[jy: to avoid underesl,:naling the volume of sedimenin the chamber, the
measuring device must be lowered to lhe top of the sediment pile carefully. Finer, silly particles at lhe
top of the pile rypically o(ler less resistance to the end of the rod than larger paAicles toward the bottom
of the pile.
Cleaning
Maintaining Ihe Vortechs system is easiest when ihere is no 11ow entering Ihe system. For this reason,
it is a good idea to schedule lhe cleanout during dry wealher. Cleanout of lhe Vortechs system with a
vacuum truck is generally the mosl efleclive and convenient method of excavating pollutants from lhe
system. If such a truck is not available,a "clamshell"grab may be used, hut it is difficult to remove all
accumulated pollutanls with such devices.
In installations where the risk of lage petroleum spills is small, liquid contaminants may not
accurrwlate as quickly as sedimenl. However, an oil or gasoline spill should be cleaned oul
immedialely. Motor oil and other hydrocarbons lhat aacumulale on a more rouline basis should be
removed when an appreciable layer has been captured. To remove these pollutants, it may be
preferable to use adsorbent pads since they are usually cheaper to dispose o`than the oil water
emulsion lhat may be created by vacuuming lhe oily layer. Trash can be netted out if you wish lo
separale il from the olher pollulanis.
Accumulated sediment is typically evacuated through the manhole over the gri;chamber. Simply
remove lhe cover and insert the vacuum hose into Ihe gnt chamber. As waler is evacualed, the waler
ievel outside of the grit chamber will drop to the same level as the crest ol ihe lower aperture of the gnt
chamber. It will not drop below this level due to the(act lhat the botlom and sides of the grit chamber
are sealed to ihe lank Ooor and walls. This"Water Lock"feature prevents water from migrating inlo the
grichamtrr, exposing the botlom of the baf0e wall. Floaling pollutanls will decant into the gnt
chamber as the water level there is drawn down. This allows moel floating material lo be withdrawn
Irom the same access point above the gril chamber.
If maintenance is not performed as recommended, sedimenl may accumulale outside lhe gril
chamber. If ihis is the case, it may be necessary to pump out all chambers. It is a good idea to check
for accumulalion in all chambers during each maintenance event to prevent sediment build up lhere.
Uanhole covers shouid be securely seated following cleaning activities, to ensure lhat surface runoff
does nol leak into the unit from above.
2006 CONTECH Stormwater Solutions 117
