This has raised issues regarding the use of staples as subs[itu[es fnr
the specified nailing in shea:walls, floor, and roof diaphragms. Based on fas:enervalues li:ted
in the Council of American Builing Officials (CABO) Report Number NER-272, staples may
be substituted for nails as follow:;:
• For specified 8d common or galvanized box nails, use 16 GA x 7/16" crown x 1 3/4" leg
staples at 2/3 of the specified nail spacing. (example: for 8d a[ 6" o.c. use staples at 4"
o.c.).
For specified lOd common or galv;uized box nails, use 16 GA x 7/16" crown x I 3/4" leg
staples at 1/2 of the specified nail spacing. (example: for !Od at 6" o.c. use staples at 3"
o.c.).
No[es:
Staples must have 1" minimum peneva[ion in[o [he framing beneach. The 1 3/4" leg
length noted is for shea:hing up to 3/4" in thickness.
Both legs of the smple must be embedded in the framing for full load ratine.
Staple crowns should be flush with the she:ithing surface for full load rating. Adjust
equipment to avoid setdng staples deeply beloH the shea[hing surface.
Fastener spacing along intertnediate members slill be the same as for nails.
Other gauge staplzs may be used with adjustment to [he reyuired on center spacing based on
rated load capac;ry.
Thcse guidelines are based on use of a 16 gauge stanle since this is the nost widely used in the
field. Other fzstener types and sizes muy be used but are subject to review on an ndividual
basis.
626 • 128ih Sireet Southwest, Suite 107 • Everett, Washington 982i14-6368 • Phone (206) 513•2500 • Faz (206) 742•28?2
