,+ "'
---.--
' cverett
T0: Appeal Board
FROM: Tim Tyler, Building Official
DATE: December 14, 1989
RE: Motel Wiring
1122 8roadway
The City of Everett requires the electrical wiring in all occupancies,
except dwell.gs, to be in metallic raceways (conduit).
The National Electrical Code defines dwellings as a occupancy that
contains facilities for sleep=ng, cooking, and eating (Articles 100,
zzo-s, 22a2o).
The rationale for this amendment is the relative safety of electrical
wirig in conduit in conjunction with the transient nature and the level
oP familiarity of a building's occupants.
Other cities within the State that have NEC revisions concerning conduit
are:
Aberdeen (FVC allowed)
Rellevue
Longview
Mount Lake Terrace
Ocean Shores (PVC allowed)
Olympia (downtown)
Pullman
Seattle (downtown)
Tacuma (over 5,000 sq. ft.)
Renton
Wenatchee
The appeallant submitted a proposal (aYtached) to the developer dated
August 25, 1989, which did not include conduit. The appellant obtained an
electrical permit on September 6 and asked the permit techician, "if the
City has any revisions to the NEC," and apparantly was not informed of
any. A contract was executed Septembe:c 7 which did not include conduit.
A conversation between the appellant and the e'_ectrical inspector on
Oecember 8 revealed the City requirement for conduit.
The building frame is drilled for wire and the appeallant has requested
the use of wire be accepted as an alternate method and material for
construction.
Enclosure
(250)
