(Paul Largy)
MESSA(iE: Paul,th(a fs a follow-up ro our corrversation Wednsiday June 9 conceming water service source,
roulinp, end flowa end pressures for the proposed Volurnsrs of America Faod Bank at 1230 Braadway here in
Everen.
You had contected Bob Bosek aboul the'Ciry'decidinq ft would rather not impact traffic an Broadway with
the trenching that would be needed to connect to the water mafn on the other side of Me atreet. Rather.you
would like to aerv¢the building trom the mafn in LomDard,to the west You suggested routing the new water line
on ihe north side ef the curb, in the rightof-way, so as to minimize impact on the concrete paving in 131h.
In order to determine if the prasure and 11ow in the LombaM Iine ia adequab, you asked me to check wrih
my mechanlcal engineer to determine ths buildinp's needs. Here's what I found tor you:
Dometic:50 gpm,50 psl static pressure desired.
Fire Protection: (estimated):600 pallons per minute at 30 psig flowing. This is est3mated alnce we do not
have a final desipn for the system yet The usual procass is to tell ths tiro protectlon contractor what level of
coverage ts required(xx pallons per minute over u square feet)and have them deaiqn Mir piping to get the
water throuph the building. From that, they can detertnlne the gpm,and if they know your flowirg pressure, they
can decide how big the plpes need to be. For us to tell you a flowinp pressure is a bit backwards;the 30 psig
value is enough for the sprinklers to work, but we cannot tell if the system cost would Increase over what it would
have cost with a connectlon to Broadway's line. The hlpher dts pnsturc avallable, the better. Also, note that fhis
does not take Into acxount flows and prossures which the flre marshall may require, includinp hydranVhose
reserves. It Is very likely that the plan raview documerna you havs include these calcs on a fire marshall's
worksheet
Please keep us posted on thls development. The projct has been bid based on the"current'design;we
had been told that Public Works h d sipned off on the site issues; now it looks like the Owner may have increased j
costs to install more plpe to brin ter to the building, and possiby to upslze pipes Inside. u,
 _
F pM: el O.Niemi AIA[joslndykeman.net]
F m O.
