NOWARD . JONNSON ASSOCIATES
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
91'I N. E. 45th Street ME 2-1240 Seattle Wahington 98105
6421 18 September1964
City Hall
Everett, Washington
Attention: Electrical Inspection Department
Re: Bud's Cafe _-"/; ". _ _. -. .- •_
/
Gentlemen:
We have been informed by Mr. [iutterfield, Architect, in the office of John Bryant,
Architect, Everett, Washington that you do not approve of the emergency lighting
" on referenced ob which was engineered in our office. We understand that your
particular objection was that of switching the lights.
There may be some misunderstanding in this regard. As indicated in our diagram
on the drawing the lights are not switched except when normal power is available.
When the normal source of power is interrupted the transfer relay automatically transfers
the lights to the emergency source, bypassing the swttches. The lights cannot
be switched while in an emergency condition.
We have used this method of handling emergency lighting for years without any
obection from other inspectors in the States of Washington, Oregon and California.
As a matter of fact, we have previously used this method on a few iobs built in
Everett, Washington without any complaints.
In our opinion Section 700-15-a of the National Electrical Code permits the use
of an automatic transfer switch on emerqency circuits as in the case at hand.
iJntil advised by you to the contrary we shall assume that what we are doing is in
accordance with the code and will instruct the Contractor to proceed with the
installation per the Contract Drawings.
Sincerely yours,
 / r ,.-f•.,, -°,___
-'f"L,rrtr 1 . _
Howard E.
