The initial estimate which
we received indicated to us that the cost to repair would
exceed the economic value of the building.
We then contacted Mr. Earl Bently who is the tenant
and the operator of the Tourist Cafe. Mr. Bently advised me
that he enjoyed running the Tourist Cafe, that many people in
the neighborhood enjoyed and utilized the cafe, and ihat for
many people it was considered to be a long and important part
of the city's past and a place that they simply enjoyed going
to. He advised us that he would like to keep the cafe open,
but he could only do so if repairs could be made on an cconomic
basis.
He then advised us that he knew some people who might
be willing to concri.bute services to repair the building sufficiently
to keep the city happy. He contacted some old friends of hi.s
which included Mr. Bil Finley, AIA. Mr. Finley went down to the
cafe and was o£ the opinion that suitable repairs could be made
at a relatively modest expense, but that they would probably have
to be done by a contractor. He then advisei Mr. Sently that he
would have some contractors get in touch with him and give us an
idea as to their opinion of the cost to repair the building.
Unfortunately, during this interim no time table was deteloped
L—_. _
i
e
