Staple the
upstream edge of cach sod strip.
G. Roll the sodded area and inigate.
7. When sodding is carricd out in altemating strips or other pattems, seed the azeas between tlie sod
pieces immediately aftcr soddiug.
Maintenance Standards
(f the grass is unhealthy, the cause shall be determined and appropriate action taken to reestablish a
hcalthy groundcover. If it is impossible to establish a healthy groundcover due to trequent saturation,
instability,or some other cause, the sod shali be remo:ed,thc area sceded with an appropriate miz,and
protected with a net ar blanket.
3.2.12 BMP C125: Topsoiling
Purpose
The purpose is to provide e suitable growth medium for final sitc stabilization with vegctation. Whilc not
a permanent cover practice in itself, ropsoiling is xn integral component of providing pertnanent covet in
those azeas where there is an unsuitable soil surFacc for plent growth. Native soils and disturbed soils that
6ave beea organically amended not only retain much more srormwater, but they elso serve es effective
biofilters for urben pollutants and,by supporting more vigorous plant growth, reduce Ihe water, fertilizcr
and pesticides needed to support installed landscapes. Topsoil does not include any subsoils but only the
roaterial from the top several inches including organic debris.

Conditions of Use
• Native soils should be left undisturbed to the maximum extent practicable. Native soils disturbed
duriug clearing and grading should be restored,to the maximum extent precticable,to a condition
where moisture-holding capacity is equal to or better than the or,ginal site conditions. This
criterion can be met by using onsitc native topsoil, incorporating amendments into onsite soil, or
impoRing bleoded topsoil.
• Topsoiling is e required procedure when esteblishing vegetation on shallow soils, and soils of
critically low pH(high acid) Icvels. •
• Shipping of existing, propedy functioning soil system and vegetalion For the purpose o(
topsoiling during conshuction is not acceptable. If an existing soil system is functioning properly
it shall be preserved in its undisturbed and uncompacted condition.
• Depending on where the topsoil comes Gom,or what vegetatioo was on site before disturbance,
invasive plant seeds may be includcd and could cause problems for establishing native plants,
lendscnped areas,or grasses.
• Topsoil from the site will contain mywrthizal bactcria that are neccssary for healthy root @rowth
and nutrient transfer. These native mycocrhiza aze acclimated to ihe site and will provide
optimum conditions for establishing grasses. Commcrcially availablc mycnrrhiza products
should be used when topsoil is brought in from off site.
Design end Installation Speclficafions
If tnpsoiling is to be done,Ihe following items sall be considered:
Volume II—Construcfion SformwaterPollutior Prevention
3-20
