To: File
From: Marian Dent
Date: April 4, 1985
Subject: 902 Broadway - Tire 3usiness
Since the first of tne ye2r I have received several complaints
concerning the aa.:wmilation of tires at 902 Broadway. The
compla'nts were cuncerns of t},e area being unsightly, tires
falling n the stret or sideiaalk and becaning a danger to the
public, tie possihility of another tire fire, and just plain
storage o:` tires.
I checked with the Fire Departrnent and the Pire Marshal said that
Lhe tires alone were not a fire hazard. The point of igniticn
for a tire to burn is extremely higli.
I checked with the Planning Department ior possible zoning violations.
The Planning Department indicated that the owner was given per-
mission to conduct his tire business at this location based on the
same type of business Dir. A1 Bolzer is conducting in the same
type of Uusiness zone. The only restriction placed on D1artin's
tire business at 902 Broadway tiaas the use of only 50$ of the
property for recapping of the tires.
Keeping in mind the information I acquired,I proceedecl to contact
htartin on February Sth regarding the large moimds of tires he had at
the location. He indicated that the discarded tires are removed
on a weekly basis and transported to Ore;on for disposal.
The tires he planned to sell would Ue stored in racks for a neater
appearance.
A1artin also stated that he tiaanted to construct a sight-obscuring
fence. I asked him to meet with Jerry Ervine in Planning to make
sure that all the requirements that the Planning Department may have
would be met.
Since February 5th I liave talked witli b1artin at the site. He has
made some progress but business has Ueen slow, as he indicated yes-
terday, and making or purdiasing the tire racks is costly.
I asked hiartin to move the tires situated along the sidewalk on
Broadway. I requested him to move the tires Uack as far as the
telephone pole and he said he tiould.
