Mr. Anderberg
indica[ed [his sewer line would be rerou[ed around the fuCure
Uuilding to facilitate access for maintenance.
}lis present concern is wi[h the portion of pipe to be abandoned
beneath the proposed store. Freliminary altcrnatives were to
ei[her remove th pipe along thi.s portion or backfill with a
sand and wa[er slurry. Because of the relatively deep excavation
which would be reyui.red to remove the pipe, the backfill
alternative was selected. However, Mr. Anderbcrg indicated
several bids for this werk tiave heen cociaidered and the costs
appcar [o be approximateiy $]O,OCO, ln ordcr Co reduce the
cos of this effort, hc is propos+ng to liminate backfilling
of the pipe and cap each nd. 'Phe con:ern with this proposal
is whethcr or not the building foundation hould be adversely
affected. `
Ke unders[and Che 360 foo[ lon, concrete pipe is located at
lcas[ 21 feet below buiidin grade. The pipeline croases the
northwes[ and southeast wal.l at right anLles. In our opinion,
[he loads imposed on the pipr. by thc new building would be
substantially dissirated at [hat depth. Also because of the
burial depth, the potential for undcrminin support through
mi£•,ration of soils into [he pipe should be minimal. Therefore,
it is our opinion, tha[ eliminatin Che backfillinp, of thc pipe
and cappin; each end would not adversely affect the building
foundation.
We app::eciate che opportuni[y to be of service to you.
lf yu have further quescions, pleasc cll at your carliesC
convenience.
EcrivFo
FEQ 1 1 1980
DESiGN SERVICE BUiLDING, 1910 fAIRy1EW AVENi iE FAST, SEATTLE. 'dASH 9810?.
