a98�c EVERETT FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE PREVENTION BUREAU FIRE MARSHAL POLICY MINI-STORAGE BUILDINGS - FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS REQUIRED The Everett Fire Department has determined that mini-storage buildings, wherein multiple persons :,�ay rent or lease individual units for storage -- purposes, present special hazards and under authority of the Uniform Fire Code (1988 editicn), Section 10.301(b) hereby requires installation of automatic fire extinguishing systems throughout all such two-story buildin9s and all one-story buildings exceeding 3000 square feet in size hereafter constructed. Section 10.301(b) states: "In occupancies of an especially hazardou, nature or where special hazards exist in actdition to the normal hazard of the occupancy, or where access for f.tre apparatus is unduly difficult, additional safeguards may be recp�ired consisting of additional fire appliance units, more thar, one type of appliance, or special systerns suitable for the protection of the hazard involved. Such devices or appliances may consist of automatic fire alarm systems, automatiG sprinkler or water spray systems, standpipe and hose, fiued or portable fSre extinguishers, suitable esbestos blankets, breathing apparatus, manual or automatic covers, or carbon dioxid�, foam or other special fire-extinguishing systems. Where such systems are installed, they shall be in accordance with the applicable Uniform Fire Code Standards or Standards of the National Fire Protection Association when the Uniform Fire Code Standards do not app.ly." Findings in support of this action include the following: 1. Numerous parties are exposed to property loss from a fire involving a single building. 2. Construction typically utilized incorporates no fire rated separations between individual units or corridors. Often there is no separation at upper levels where heat, fla�ne, smoke and gases concentrate. 3.
