Broadway
Everett, WA 98201
2087
12/9102
10:00 AM
Present At Site: Steve Amdd, P.E., Slructural Engineer, Poggemeyer Dcsign Group
Dave LaCoursiere - owner
Scope of Inspectlon:
A structural inspection site visit was conducted on December 9, 2002, in response to a request
hom Dave Hunter (Nap management Inc.). The inspection was specifically focused on lhe roof
graviry support system. A new mechanical unit weighing 580 Ib. is to be added to the existing
roof structure. Refer to attached sketch "SK1" for IocaHon new mechanical unit.
Observatlona:
The existing roof spans NorthSouth witli trusses at 24" o.c. The trusses have a top chord slope
of approximately '/."/ft with the deepest part of the truss at the south end support. At the north
end of the building the trusses are supported by a glulam beam 3.125"x 22.5". This beam
spans 22' to columns at each end.
Recommendatlons:
The existing structural members are evaluated in the supplemental calculations. The glue-lam
beam is the only visible member that can be evaluated objecGvely. Its strength is evaluffied,
compared to the demands and found to be adequate. The new HVAC unit load will be distributed
to four of lhe exisHng roof trusses. This distribution of the load results in a 9% increase in the
truss shear and 4% increase in the truss moment. The truss shear and moment allowable
capacities are not easily obtained because of their custom fabrication. The columns supporting
the north beam are loaded 4°/a more than the existing condition.
Considering the small loads applied to the roof by the new HVAC unit and knowing the factor of
safety built into the code specified loads anu aiiwables, it is our opinion that it is acceptable to
place the new mechanical unit on the existing roof.
I'oGgcmcqCi Ccdqn Cio,o.
