Without this exception, the code would
literally be requiring accessible fixlures in inaccessible
dwelling and sleeping units. It is importanl to note lhal
ihe bathrooms associated with required Accessible,
7ype A and Type B dweiling and sleeping units must
comply with the requirements in ICC A117.1, Chapler
10.
Exception 3 specifies that all toilel rooms lhal are
clustered together need not be accessible. In such
con(igurations, typically found in a doctor's office or
drug tesl cenler, the requirement is reduced to a 50
percent minimum. If these toilet rooms are clustered in
separate locations, such as in a mulliclinic facility, the
50 ercenl minimum would be applied to each cluster.
A single-occupant women's bathroom adjacent lo a
single-occupant men's bathroom is not considered a
cluster since they each serve a difierent sex.
The IPC permits urinals to be substituled for waler
closets to a maximum of 67 percent in each toilet room
(see IPC Seclion 419.2). Exceplion 4 states that if only
one urinal is provided within a toilet room, thal urinal is
not required to be accessible. This situation would typ-
ically only occur in toilet rooms with one water closet
compartment.
While Exception 2 would exempt all the nonaccessi-
ble palient rooms in a hospital irom accessible bath-
room requirements, lhe intent of Exception 5 is also to
exempt the Accessible units that may be provided
wilhin Ihe crilical-care or intensive care unils irom re-
quiring accessible bathrooms. In critical-care or inten-
sive-care units the palients are often too ill lo use the
balhroom w' ,ut assistance; lherefore, assistance is
oifered and expected in these areas to all patients. In
addition, critir.al-care nd intensive-care rooms oflen
must be designed to roaximize free space for equip-
ment and personnel in case of emergency care situa-
tions.
ACCESSI8ILITY
There are allowances in the ICC A117.1 for a toilet
room and water closel compartment specitically de-
signed (or children's use. This may be appropriate in
areas such as day care facilities and certain areas o(
elementary schools.
1 l ll').2.1 Gamilp or assislcd-usc tuilcl :md bathing rooms. l n
as;cmbly mtd mcrcantilc occupancics. an ucccssiLle family or
assistcJ-usc loilct room shall bc proviJcd vhcrc au aggrcgatc
of sis or morc mnlc and fcmulc ';ucr closcts is rcquircd. If that attendant is of the opposite
sex, a toilet or balhing facility that can accommodate
both persons is required. It is important to note Ihat
these provisions will typically not result in a substantial
cost burden lo the building owners, since the fixlures
provided also count towards the minimum number re-
quired (see Section 2902.1.2 or IPC Section 403.1.2).
The family or assisted-use balhing roori require-
ments, aithough beneficial to all occupancies and
T:ES TRANSFER POSITION, TRANSFERS
REMOVESARMREST, SETS BRAKG
Fc:• SI: 7 inch = 25.4 mm.
Figure 1109.2(1)
SIDE APPRCrACH WHEEL CHAIR TRANSFER
.ARY $; 009 INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE° COR9MENTARY
POSITIONS ON TOILET
i t •a
