Certain features of PC G1assBlock panele make
them appropriate for euch uses. For example:
(1) Moet atandard thickneea PC G1aeaBlock panels are claseified by
Underwriters Laboratories for a 3/4-hour rating in openinge not
exceeding 120 eq. ft. in area.
(2) Both PC GlaseHlock panels and vired glaee are eubjected to the seme
test to receive the 3/4-hour claesifica[ion, UL 9, "Fire Tebt of
Windw Asaembliee". A one hour test doee aot exiet.
(3) PC G1aesBlock panel asembliee are conetructed of materiale which are
incombuetible. •
Wherever wired glase is allwed, the use of glase block maeonry units ie
approprf.ate, but the final approval depends upon interpretation of the
local building code by the code officials of [hat uriediction. ,
Building codes differ acrosa the country. For example, the Uniform Building
Code (UBC) has a number of eectiona which could be interpreted to allow
the use of glase block masonry uni[s in fire resietive openings. Theee
, eectione of the UBC, taken from the 1982 Bdition, are duplicated in
Attachment I.
We are currPntly examining codes o[her than the UBC to eee what restric-
tione may bc placed on glazed openinge in firE: rated va11A. For exemple
the BOCA Basic Building Code2 presently reetricts [he i•ae uf glass blocke
in "Fire walle, perty walls, or. fire eeparetion walls". BOCA ha r:kiowl-
edged by letter dated 9/27/83 that PC G1aesBlock unita with a 34 hour
rating are acceptable for uee in fire eeparation walls tiat have e fire
reeietance rating of 1 hour or leae. Therefore, ve will be aeking BOCA to
revlae the preeent code vording to remove the reetriction on .fire aeFnration
valle.
