TO Mary Cunningham
FROM Ron Cameron n 8 D
DATE May 9, 1986 w MAY 14 06 `
SUBJECT Group Health Crosswalk
O17Y (lf EyOfR•E VF SETT WASMINGTON
CITY OF E ` . iCC. a
planning Dept•
A study of all pedestrians crossing Casino between the joint Group Health/Fred
Meyers driveways and the bus stops west of South Point has been completed. It
showed 69 pedestrians crossing between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Vehicle
traffic volumes were counted showing about 17,000 on a week day. 7be
pedestrians crossing are not using the already marked location and there are
few pedestrians crossing.
Marking a crosswalk is not recommended for several reasons:
1. Most pedestrian fatalities and collisions occur in marked
crosswalks yet only 5/ - lot of all crosswalks are marked - the
false illusion of protection is thought to be a contributing factor.
2. Narking the Group Health/Fred Meyers crosswalk has not helped -
less than 10 of 32 pedestrians tossing in the immediate area used
the marked crosswalk. The pedestrians walk down the street until
they reach a "break" in traffic and cross, frequently (251 - 35%)
running.
3. Marked crosswalks are installed at high volume crossing locations
which the study indicates isn't there now and proposal does not
indicate it will be.
The pedestrians will be safer crossing as they are. Future peak hour volumes
may result in Group Health requesting a signal which should be considered in
the application.
RMC/cat
cc: Larry Crawford
{)rite- vw f/"ud 4ZA" l & L0""L
Cry r'tird 30
yo (rro°P Wc,ur• N .Lrrwbrbrt. 'Cke C'v5f `rL.r..t- sro
Gaup C0K*ribJ1ee tc, -¢ 0 A24
 Q
