Beehtel Corporation
July 24, 1997 Teracon
Pps 4
Should structural loads be concentrated on the perimeter of the slab, a monolithic tum down edge
should be considered. Thickened interior sieb sections can be used to suppoR concentrated or
continuous slab loading provided that slab th(ckness and reinforcement ere consistent with
structural requirements.
Foundations and slabs should be reinforced as necessary to reduce the potendel for distress
caused by diNerential foundadon movement. Foundatlon excavatlona shouid be observed by the
geotechnical engineer. If the soil cond(tions encountered differ significanGy from those presented
in this report, supplemental recommendationa will be required.
Se(smfc Considerations: The project sfte is located in Seismic Risk Zone 3, es indicated by the
1994 Uniform Building Code. Based upon the nature of the subsurface materials, a seismic site
coefficient, "s" of 1.2 should be used for the design of structures for the proposed proJect (1994
Uniform 8uilding Code, Table No. 16-J).
General Comments: The Geotechnical Engineer shoud also be retained to provide services
during excavation, grading, foundation and construct(on phasea of the work. Observation of driiled
shaft and foundation excavations should be performed prior to placement of reinforcing and
concrete to confirm that satisfactory bearing materials are present. These services are conaidered
a necessary part of continuing geotechnical engineering services for the proJect. ConstrucUon
testing, including field and laboratory evaluation of fill, backfiil, pavement materials, concrete and
stee should be peAormed to determfne whether applicable project requirementa have been met.
It would be logical for Terracon Project Team to provide these additional services for continuity from
design through construcQon and to detertnfne the consistency of field condiUons with those data
used in our analyses.
The anaiyses and recommendations in this report are based in part upon data obtained from the
field exploration. The nature and extent of variations beyond the location of the teat boring may
not become evident until construction. If variations then appear evident, it may be necessary to
re-evaluate the recommendations of this repr.rt.
