APPENDIX A
FIELD EXPLORATIONS
The subsurface conditions at the site were investigated by drilling nine exploratory borings.
Borings BI-91, B6-91, BS-91 and 139-91 were drilled using hollow stem augers. Borings 92-91,
113-91, 114-91, BS-91 and 117-91 were drilled by hollow stem augers to shallow depths and mud
rotary drilling thereafter. Boring locations as shown on Plate 1. The top of boring elevations
were provided by SSOE, Inc. All borings were terminated in either glacially deposited till or
outwah which varied from 26 to 123 feet In depth. The boreholes were backfilled with a
cement-bentonits grout.
All field exploration were coordinated by a Dame & Moore representative who located the
borings, classified the soils encountered, maintained a log of each boring, and obtained samples
of the various strata penetrated for visual examination and laboratory testing. Graphical
representation of the soils penetrated by the borings are presented on the Log of Borings, Plates
A -I through A-25. A key to assist in undentandinr graphics[ symbo4 on the boring logs is
provided on Plate A-26. Note that some blow counts were inflated by the pnesna of cobbles,
boulders or logs. The location of inflated blow counts are indicated on the boring lop. The soils
have been classified in general aawrdance with the Unified Soil Classification System described
on Plate A-27.
Soil samples were obtained from the borings using a Dames t Moore Type-U Sampler, which
is illustrated on Page A-2. The ampler was advanced with a hammer weighlag 300 pounds and
having a free fall of 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive the ampler for the final
foot of penetration is shown at each ample location, and the densities of drill mud used in the
boroholes are presented on the Log of Borings. Also shown are the loatiom and approximate
amounts of mud loss observed during the drilling process.
a-WS•00695.016\ssaa0'OO.nq
006"409.016 A-1
