, ` SS 7 I
August I, 1997
G-8550-4-434
To: D. S. Dauenhaucr Oli-13
cc: L. C. VnnTassel OF-10
Subject: Building 45-03
Reference: Meeting,July 30, 1997, D. S. Daucnhaucr and A. W. Richter,
regarding electrical conduit passing through painl mix room i
without plug seals in conduit at penetration of wall subject
building
Fire Protection Engineering has conducted a rcvicw of the electrical installation in thc
paint mix room of the subject building. This room is part of the original Uuilding
construction and was constructed with explosion-proof fixtures throughout without
considcration as to specific occupancy. The paint mix room is open to the adjacent hall
and lacks any fire rated separations. The occupancy of this room consists of an aircraft
paint mixing operation utilizing four one-gallon and one five-gallon paint shakers as well
as a amall enclosed paint booth and a ventilated hood system to remove flwnmable
vapors when the paint is poured into five gallon containers or clean-up operation of
equipment is required. This room does not meet the requirements of a Group H,division
2 or 3 occupancy since it lacks fire rated separation and the quantities of paint stored in
the room,or in preparation for ahaking or in open containers is less than the exempt
amount for a control area.
Based on the above factors, Fire Protection Engineering would view this room as a Group
F,division I occupancy. Electrical requirement for specific equipment requires rated
enclosures in accordancc with Article 500 of the NEC but would not require all equipment
in the room to be rated. This condition is similar to retail paint supply outlets that shake
paint and have rated equipment in the immediate vicinity of the equipment, but does not
have all equipment in the area approved fbr Class I, division 2 locations.
Article 501-5 (b)of the Nntional Electrical Code requires conduit seals when the run passes
from lhe Class I boundary into an unclassified location. The existing room is nol a Class l,
division 2 area as currently utilized. Operations involving liberation of flammable vapors
are extremely limited and the likelihood of a release of paint from a single shaker causing a
,,
I „
' `':
i '`':
i r„';t
