Subgrade Preparation
  o
" ' R After the completion of clearing, strinpng znd overexcavation, soil exposed in azeas to receive
y strctural fill, slabs-on-grade or pavemr.n sunaces shouid be scarified to a depth of 6 inches,
qy y moisture-conditioned to slightly above optimmn water content and compacted to tiie requirements
X o m , for structural fill.
 ` c
, y 4. Temporlry Excavations

It is our opinion that open-cut excavation can be performed if the sides of the excavadon are
sloped at an indination of 1.SH:1V (Horizontai:Vertical) or flatter (Type C soil in OSHA
Excavation Rcgulations). If such slope inclination cannot be achieved it would be necessary to
use temporary shoring to support the excavation. In any case, excaation depths including utilily
trenches should comply with local, state and fedetal safery regulations. Specifically, the current
i OSHA Health znd Safery Slanduds for excava!ions, 29 CFR Part 1926, should be followecl.
, We understand that these regulations are to be strictly enforceci and if they aze not closely
followea the owner and contractor could be liable for substntial penalties. The contractor's
a "responsible person, as defined in 29 CFR Part 1926" should evxlaate tlie soil exposed in the
i, excavations as part of the contnctor's safety procedures.
= We recommend that a representative from Kaldveer Associates moniror the soils exposed in all
i excavations and provide engineering services for such slopes. This will provide an opportunity
to monitor the soil rypes encountered and to modify the excavation slopes as necessary. It also
. offers an opportunity to verify the stabiliry of the excavation slopes during construction.
5, Fi111fatcrial
'.
' ° The moiswre content of the site soils at the time of our exploration was above optimum. On-site
soils below the stripped layer and having an organic content of less than 3 percent by volume
' ' ' and aze not oil-contaminated can be used as fill if the moismre content allows. Based on our
+. ' exploratory borings, it is our opinion that the on-site soils cannot be used as fiil because of its
organic content and oceasional cunstruction debris However, hceause of its variauon this non-

engineered fill should be examined during excavation to determiue its suitability as sWcturai fill.
` All structural fill should consis[ of a free-draining, granulaz organio-free material with a
, , mimum size of three inchcs. It shnuld contain less than 5 percent fines (silt and clay-size
i .,,, particles passing the No. 2i0 mesh sieve).
\ ` ,111 fiil nerial should be pla:r_d at or near the optimum moismre couent. If the mterials are
[co we ?o Ue:ompacted to the requi:ed degree, it will be necessary to aiy rhem or repiace them
with a mor.; granular materiaL Pill matenals can be dried by aeration or by intermixing cement
powder to absorb excess moismre.
KaldveerAssociatr;.:
