BUREAU OF BUILDINGS
POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL
Title
Secondary Supply or Water Requirement of
U.B.C. Section 1807
BUILDING CODE SECTION: 1807(c) 2.
Procedure No
0-52
Da to
01/02/86
In seismic zones No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4, in addition to the main water supply,
a secondary on -site supply of water . . . shalt be provided. This supply shall
be automatically available if the principal supply fails and shall have a dura-
tion of thirty mir 's.
DISCUSSION:
In the downtown area of the City there is a water supply grid consisting of
various sized water pipes originating from different mains and located on two
or more sides of a block. The water mains are, in turn, supplied from various
reservoirs and tanks. If one source is disrupted, the grid will still be
supplied by the others. A commonly proposed alternate to the code requirement
is to connect two lines from the building to this grid. The two connections are
separated by a valve on the grid.
POLICY:
Because of seismic considerations and the need to manually operate the separating
valve, this alternate is not considered to be equivalent to that prescribed by
the code for new buildings. However, it can be considered for older, renovated
buildings, provided that the connections to the water grid system be separated
as far as practical and that the connections to the building be flexible enough
to allow relative displacements at the soil/structure interface.
Responsible Office
IPermits Manager
Distribution
All Sections
Issued By
Margaret Mahoney
