Are two e•rits required from the third floor of the two story units? <br /> Section 3303ia) of the 1985 UBC requires two separate exits, without <br /> exception. The 1988 UBC in Section 3303(a) clarifies this condition in <br /> exception three. "When the third floor within an individual dwelling unit <br /> does not exceed five hundred square feet only one exit need be provided <br /> from that floor." A single exit from the top floor (third story) of the <br /> two Ploor units as shown is allowed. <br /> 2. Width of stair and landing. First to second Ploor. <br /> The landing may be 36 inches in depth on a stair in excess of 36 inches in <br /> width if the stair is not required to have a width areater than 36 <br /> inches. Section 3306(,j) allows a handrail on one s�de when the stair <br /> width is less than 44 inches when serving one unit. Two handrails are <br /> required when two or more units are served. <br /> 3.
