The Everctt.
Municipal Code requires all basements with drains or sewers whero there exists the
unusual danger oF "backup" from the public sewer system to lift their dischazge by
artificial means or install a backwater valve at the outlet:
Basement areas susceptible to backup are typically those spaces whose floor elevation is
below th elevation of the abutting street or alley and located within the combined sewer
azea as delineated on the enclosed map.
There aze two generally acceptable methods to control backup. Enclosed for your review
is informarion conceming the backwater valve and grinder pump systems. Both systems
require maintenance by the homeowner with the backwater valve probably requiring more
maintenance than the grinder pump system. Both installations require that a permit be
obtained from the Public Works Department service countet located on the second floor
at 3200 Cedar Street. Installation f a backwater valve requires a S27 piumbing permit.
A grinder pump system equires rl $30 sewer alteration permit, a S27 plumbing pemvt,
and a $35 electrical pernut.
We hope this cotrespondence will 'nelp clarify and provide guidance conceming this
issue. The licensed plumber of your choice should be able to teview youc situation,
answer your site specific questions and install the system of your choice with the
appropriate perntits.
Sincerely,
Lazry Crawford
Eng/Pub Svs Director
c:a:t;srnw
C1TY OF EVERETT• 320D Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 •(425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257•8856
