6
January, 2004
Dear potential grantee,
In 1999,the Washington State Urban and Community Forestry(U&CF)Program launched a new
grant program designed to target larger cities. The overwhelming response to the first round of
this program showed us that communities with populations over 35,000 needed larger grants to
complete projects.
We have available funding(approximately$90,000)to do another round of Urban Initiative
Grants in 2004. Eligible communities must have a population exceeding 35,000. The maximum
grant for any city is $30,000, and the minimum is$20,000. All grant funds must be matched on
a one-to-one basis. Priority will be given to projects focusing on inner-city issues.
All it takes to apply a one-page application form, maximum three(3)page project description,
and an estimate of the project budget. The necessary forms have been included. All applications
will be screened, and a site-visit will be scheduled with ten(10) finalists. Final grant awards will
be selected from those finalists. Applications are due April 1, 2004.
Chances are somewhere in your city's comprehensive plan there is a component dealing with
conservation, protection, and management of natural resources. Eligible projects will generally
promote those natural resource issues, and, specifically address urban forestry program
management and development.
We are looking forward to receiving your city's application. The U&CF Program is the result of
a partnership of the Washington State DNR and the U.S. Forest Service.
