RESOLUTION NO. 5575 ePo olb :A' <br /> A RESOLUTION of the City of Everett to honor the <br /> Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee <br /> for its twenty years of coordinating the Greater Everett <br /> Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. community celebration <br /> WHEREAS, Everett is home to a rich and vibrant population of diverse ethnic <br /> backgrounds that are of great importance to both the history and future of our community; and <br /> WHEREAS, in 1986, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday was declared a federal <br /> holiday to be celebrated annually on the third Monday of each January; and <br /> WHEREAS, former Washington State Governor Booth Gardner, in an effort to honor the <br /> holiday across the State, requested Pastor Matthew McSwain of the Second Baptist Church of <br /> Everett to organize and coordinate a community celebration; and; <br /> WHEREAS, in 1987, the Greater Everett Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. community <br /> Celebration Committee, originally comprised of members of area African American Christian <br /> churches, created the multi-ethnic, multi-faith based community celebration honoring the legacy <br /> of the Rev.
